Everyone starts out working from home for the first time. We all did. Some of the terminology at first glance can be confusing to say the least. On this page we'll be going through the meanings of the most common terms in the Home Based Business world. Most of the terms at face value are pretty self-explanitory.
But we'll go through them as it will give you a good understanding on how home based businesses work. Let's go!
Newbie: I guess a good place to start would be to explain what a Newbie is. A newbie is a person who is just starting out in this industry. It is a slang term for a person who is new to the Internet and Web culture in general. For example, if you're not familiar with something on a message board, you might be called a "newbie". Usually this isn't meant to be derogatory, it's simply a classification term.
Matrix: A type of compensation plan that limits the number of people on your frontline, usually to two or three. Your frontline would be your first 2 people who join you in Supreme 2X2, or who you refer or sponsor. There are a few other types of compensation plans for home businesses. Most are designed with a matrix of some kind, whether they be a 2X2, 3X3, 3X7, 3X9, etc. The bigger the matrix, the longer it takes to make money, plain and simple.
Network Marketing: Any form of selling that allows independent distributors to recruit other independent distributors and to draw a commission from the sales of those recruits. 98% of all home based businesses are Network Marketing companies.
Upline: Used to describe (in on-line marketing) the person who referred you to a particular business opportunity. Also known as your Sponsor.
Downline: These are the people that you have sponsored or referred into a business on-line. You would be their Upline.
Networking: Connecting offline or online in various social settings with other business-minded people in sharing common interests or uncovering new opportunities.
Referrer: A referrer is the person who introduced you into a Home Business Opportunity. Also known as your upline or sponsor. A referred person is also known as the customer or member.
Recruit: A person who has agreed to join your downline in your Home Business Opportunity. Also known as a referred member, someone you sponsor.
Spillover: The best way to describe this is where people get placed into your Home Business Opportunity due to people your Upline brings in. When your Upline refer's new members, they have the potential to "spillover" into your organization, helping to grow your business even quicker.
Spillunder: Basically the opposite of the way you get spillover. Spillunder comes from the efforts of your Downline referring people into the Home Business Opportunity.
Leader: A top achiever in an Home Business Opportunity. In the Deals For Life Network, we like to define a Leader in more broader terms by saying they are go-getters and take charge making their success a reality.
These are a few of the most common terms used in home based business opportunities. There are many more, but this will give you a good overview, so when you see them or hear us talking about them, you will have a good understanding of what's being discussed.
Another side of the On-line marketing terminology would be the different types of business plans for any given opportunity. Like we've said, there are tens of thousands of opportunites out there today. Most of them are similar in the fact that they are all structured in the same basic manner. 98% of all home based opportunites are referral type plans. Which basically means that you refer people to your business to make money. This happens in many different ways such as:
- Speaking with people directly in person or on the phone about your business and inviting them to join.
- Inviting people to join your business by placing ads in emails or other types of on-line advertising.
- Placing ads in newspapers, classified ads, or magazines.
- Handing out business cards, flyers and brochures.
- Setting up 800 lines people can call to find out more about what you are offering.
There are hundreds of different ways to refer people into your business opportunity. Some work better than others. Don't let that scare you at all. Just as in the "outside work world", people need to know about your business before they will join, or buy anything from you. If you are a Newbie to network marketing, or home businesses in general, there are some things you may want to consider before joining. Most people and companies won't tell you what i am about to, they would consider it a great sin.
It's not right by any means, but most people who have been in marketing for any amount of time see all people as numbers and dollar signs. They will try to get you to join a business, make a quick buck, and move on. Leaving their referred members to fend for themselves usually resulting in a very bad taste in their mouth.
This is why the Deals For Life Network was developed. We met many people who failed, not from any fault of their own neccessarily, but because they were promised easy money and a leader who would support them every step of the way. This wasn't and isn't in most cases.

Home Based Marketing Businesses are not for everyone. So before joining, ask yourself a few qustions:
1) Can you afford the one time $33 to join Supreme 2X2?
2) Do you have a ton of debt and will joining this just add to it? It is a bad idea to put these types of things on CC's unless you are in the habit of paying them off every month.
3) Will you devote at least 10 hours a week to work your business? If not, don't Join.
4) Can you talk to people about your business? If you won't or can't, even after some training, Don't Join.
5) Family is more important than a business. If you are having serious family problems, get them resolved before joining.
6) Can you learn and are you willing to learn something new, and follow direction from those who are successful?

Whether you realize it or not, you see and hear advertisements for these types of businesses probably many times every week. On any given day there are more than 100 million people looking for or attempting to start their own business from home. That is quite a market.
